Subsciptions

When a loved one dies, some bills and subscriptions must be taken care of. If you are the one responsible, it can be overwhelming to think about how many open accounts one individual might have. Keeping track of your passwords - near impossible - but figuring out someone else's? That is a whole new ball game.

Let's slowly chip away at these recurring monthly bills so you aren't paying for Hulu for life.

Subscriptions

No doubt taking notes & staying organized can help you efficiently close out all open accounts on behalf of a loved one. Access our subscription spreadsheet here inside your library to track the important information you need to stay on top of these tasks.

Canceling the deceased subscriptions requires you to gather information and documents, make a list of the providers, and contact the providers.

Not every subscription service is the same. Some may require you to have a death certificate and proof of legal testimony, depending on the type of service.

Many people have regular medical prescriptions that are automatically refilled at a pharmacy.

Contact the doctor
who cared for the person who died to see if the deceased was on any medications that may have been automatically refilled. The doctor may be able to give you the name & location of the pharmacy and assistance in canceling.

Call your provider's customer support number and tell the representative that you'd like to cancel or transfer the contract and the reason why. You should not be charged a fee for either canceling a contract after a death or transferring a contract after a death.

You may have to provide the account holder's name (the name of the person who established the account), the mobile phone number of the deceased, the date of death, and the Social Security number of the deceased.

Mail delivered by the US Postal Service can either be canceled or forwarded to another address. To forward the deceased’s mail, you must complete a Change of Address Form and submit the form to your local post office, along with proof that you are authorized to manage the deceased’s mail (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration).

The are some circumstances where you may run into trouble with a service provider who makes things difficult for you to cancel. To no one's surprise, they attempt to make things as complex as possible to continue receiving charging the account.

The best thing you can do is stay persistent & if that doesn't work, contact your credit card company about the payments and contact the Better Business Bureau to report the company.

How to Handle

Utilities

Closing out all utilities

Utilities

SEGMENT THREE

If there is someone still living in the home of the deceased, they will make arrangements with the utility company and executor. The executor will ultimately be responsible for the handling of all utilities.

Take inventory of every utility being used. Is it necessary to maintain following the passing of the homeowner? If so, transfer bills to the current tenant.

Ensure that all late payments are made through the estate and contact each company directly to transfer ownership and make payments.

SEGMENT Three

  • What you will need:
  • Your loved one’s personal details – name, address, date of birth
  • A copy of the death certificate
  • The account number
  • Up-to-date meter readings (if applicable)
  • In some cases, a grant of probate or letter of administration showing that you are allowed to make changes to the account – although you can make the initial contact with a company before either is granted
  • Your contact details and a proof of identification/address

What you will need to cancel utilities:

The account was set up with a “Transfer on Death” for an earmarked individual

Transfer of Death is the most seamless process, simply contact the brokerage and provide a copy of the death certificate. Once received, the account will automatically be controlled by the designated person not needing to go through probate and is not subject to any debts the deceased may have.

The beneficiary will be able to reach out to the brokerage directly and provide the deceased’s info and mail in a death certificate to gain access to the account.

You did it!! At this point, basically everything you need to do to close out all the loose ends has now been complete. If you need more resources don't forget to check out the library or connect with others in the community section.
